Disguise GX 3+: A Media Server for Large-Scale Visual Shows and Generative Content

For large-scale concerts and multimedia productions, the question is no longer whether a media server can play back 4K video. The real challenge appears when a single system must simultaneously handle dozens of video layers, multiple live cameras, 8K graphics, Notch effects, tracking data, and multiple display surfaces — all without dropped frames or noticeable latency.

What’s new in the Disguise GX 3+ media server compared to GX 3

The main improvement in the new Disguise GX 3+ media server compared to the previous GX 3 is a significant increase in computing power for generative graphics, real-time effects, and other tasks that are calculated during the show.

The Disguise GX 3+ is built around the NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 Workstation Edition GPU based on the Blackwell architecture, an AMD EPYC 9004 Series processor, and PCIe 5.0. This configuration provides additional performance headroom for projects where the media server simultaneously handles a large number of video layers, live camera feeds, and complex real-time graphics.

The increase in performance is clearly demonstrated by Notchmark — a specialized benchmark used to evaluate GPU computing performance when processing Notch graphics and effects. The GX 3+ achieved 143,699 points compared to 53,045 points on the previous GX 3 model, which is approximately 2.7 times higher.

The Notchmark score itself does not tell the whole story. Its practical meaning is much more important. The GX 3+ provides significantly more computing capacity for particle systems, 3D graphics, background removal, complex visual effects, and other elements of generative graphics.

This allows creators to build more complex scenes while reducing the risk that creative ideas will need to be simplified due to media server performance limitations.

More content from a single media server

Higher performance is not only important for effects. The Disguise GX 3+ media server can also handle a significantly larger number of video layers simultaneously.

In practice, a single layer can represent a separate background, a camera feed, a graphical effect, or an image assigned to a specific display. The more layers a server can process, the more complex the overall video composition can become.

This is especially important for concert productions and large LED installations, where content must often be distributed across multiple screens simultaneously.

Generative graphics and real-time effects

One of the key applications of the GX 3+ media server is real-time graphics (also known as generative graphics).

Unlike pre-rendered content, generative graphics are calculated while the system is running. Scene parameters can change according to the timeline or receive data from cameras, tracking systems, audio sources, and other inputs.

To create and play back this type of content, the GX 3+ supports the professional Notch platform for generative graphics and real-time visual effects. Notch is used to create particle effects, 3D graphics, camera image processing, and interactive scenes whose parameters can change directly during a live show.

A good example of this type of workload is Laura Pausini’s Yo Canto world tour. The LED screen configuration changed from venue to venue, meaning the team needed not only to play back prepared content but also continuously adapt the visual scenes to new geometries.

The GX 3+ simultaneously processed multiple camera feeds, IMAG effects, background removal, 8K particle simulations, and up to 50 Notch layers. The additional GPU performance made it possible to maintain the complexity of the visual effects without reducing their number due to media server limitations.

RenderStream Local: reducing additional hardware

Another important feature of the Disguise GX 3+ is RenderStream Local.

In complex projects, creating 3D graphics often requires a separate computer running a graphics engine. RenderStream Local allows certain workflows to run this engine directly on the GX 3+ media server.

This helps reduce the amount of equipment and simplify the overall system: fewer dedicated computers, network connections, and additional devices are required to install and configure on-site.

This capability is especially useful for interactive installations, virtual studios, and augmented reality projects, where minimizing latency between the graphics engine and the display system is critical.

Working with traditional video and IP

The Disguise GX 3+ media server can be used both in SDI-based systems (a professional standard for video transmission over cable) and in IP-based video infrastructures.

The GX 3+ features three 12G-SDI inputs, which can be configured as 12 x 3G-SDI inputs, as well as three 4K outputs through interchangeable VFC cards.

VFC allows users to select the required video connectivity option depending on the project. Available options include DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, Quad 3G-SDI, and SMPTE ST 2110.

The latter is especially important for large-scale systems. SMPTE ST 2110 enables professional video, audio, and ancillary data signals to be transmitted over an IP network instead of using separate signal paths.

For rental companies, this provides additional flexibility: the same media server can be used across projects with different video infrastructures.

How GX 3+ works together with the Barco Encore3 video processor

In large-scale video systems, the Disguise GX 3+ media server can work together with the Barco Encore3 video processor. This combination is particularly useful when a project requires not only playback and processing of complex visual content but also management of multiple video signals and display devices.

The two devices perform different tasks.

The GX 3+ creates and plays back content, receives camera feeds, and handles real-time graphics processing. The Encore3 receives signals from the media server, cameras, and other sources, then scales, switches, and distributes the image across LED screens, projectors, and other display systems.

This separation of responsibilities is highly effective in large projects: the media server focuses on complex image processing, while the video processor manages signal routing and distribution.
