Ayrton Falconer: Remote Followspot Control System

1

Ayrton has introduced Falconer, a remote followspot control station designed for theatres, concert venues, television studios, and large-scale live events. Falconer allows operators to control the movement and parameters of lighting fixtures from a separate operating position while retaining the precision and familiar feel of a traditional followspot.

Instead of standing next to the lighting fixture, the operator can monitor the stage on Falconer's display via a connected camera. The operating position can be located wherever it is most convenient to follow the performance, regardless of where the fixtures are installed. This is particularly useful for complex lighting rigs and productions involving multiple fixtures.

Ergonomic Control and Precise Followspot Operation

Ayrton Falconer features two handles that provide smooth and precise control over fixture movement. The fluid head mechanism with adjustable drag allows operators to perform both fast beam movements and slow, controlled tracking of performers.

The Falconer station features an 18.5-inch Full HD touchscreen displaying a live video feed from a camera mounted on a lighting fixture. Programmable buttons and controls are positioned within easy reach, allowing operators to adjust lighting parameters without taking their hands off the handles.

Falconer provides control over essential fixture parameters, including colour, intensity, iris, zoom, focus, gobos, and frost.

Frequently used settings can be saved as custom presets. These may include fixture position, colour, intensity, and fade-in or fade-out times. This simplifies the preparation of complex lighting scenes and allows operators to quickly recall predefined fixture positions.

How Operators Receive the Stage Video Feed

There are two options for transmitting a live video feed from the stage to the Ayrton Falconer station. The first is an optional camera mounted directly on a compatible lighting fixture, such as Ayrton EagleStrike. In this configuration, the operator views the stage from the fixture's position.

The second option is a separate Ayrton Horus pan-and-tilt camera. Horus can be installed independently of the lighting fixtures, in a position that provides a clear view of the performer and the relevant stage area. The camera transmits a live video feed to the Falconer station, while its viewing direction and optical zoom can be adjusted remotely.

The camera mounted on an Ayrton EagleStrike fixture and the separate Ayrton Horus camera use the same camera module, which supports infrared imaging. This allows operators to monitor performers' movements on the Falconer display even in very low stage lighting conditions.

Controlling Multiple Lighting Fixtures Simultaneously

One of Falconer's key advantages is the ability to control multiple lighting fixtures from a single operating position.

The system has no fixed limit on the number of connected fixtures. However, for optimal performance, Ayrton recommends using up to 36 simultaneously active fixtures.

To coordinate the movement of multiple fixtures, Falconer uses spatial calibration. The position of each fixture is determined using four reference points, allowing the system to direct the beams of several fixtures towards the same target point.

This enables an operator to track a single performer with multiple fixtures simultaneously, while the lighting designer can determine which fixtures are used in each scene.

Falconer can operate independently or alongside a professional lighting console, including the exchange of control data via the sACN protocol. This allows the station to be integrated into both new projects and existing stage lighting systems.

Applications in Concert and Theatre Productions

Falconer is suitable for theatres, concert halls, television studios, and stadiums. Depending on the production requirements, the video feed can come from a camera mounted on an EagleStrike fixture or a separately installed Horus camera, while the controlled lighting fixtures can be selected for each lighting scene.

Operators do not need to be positioned next to the lighting fixtures, even when they are rigged overhead or installed in hard-to-reach locations. This provides greater flexibility when designing the lighting system and organising the operator's workspace.
