Puy de Lumières: When a Historic City Becomes a Stage for Video Mapping

Puy de Lumières is an annual video mapping festival held in the French city of Le Puy-en-Velay. Every summer after nightfall, historic buildings, churches and natural landmarks across the city become stages for large-scale projection and lighting shows.

Visitors move from one location to another along an evening route, discovering the city’s architecture and history through light, animation and digital art. Key sites include the Crozatier Museum, the Carmes Church and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, the volcanic rock of Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe.

In 2026, Puy de Lumières enters its tenth season. To mark the anniversary, part of the projection system was upgraded with modern Barco QDX and UDM laser projectors.

A Story Told on the Scale of Architecture

Can a 12th-century chapel standing on top of a volcanic rock literally come to life after dark?

At Puy de Lumières, that is exactly what happens.

The project was launched in 2016 and has gradually developed into one of the largest permanent video mapping and architectural lighting routes in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

After nightfall, the Crozatier Museum, the Carmes Church, historic façades and natural landmarks become stages along a single route of light and projection shows.

A particularly important location is Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe — a volcanic rock rising above the city and crowned by a chapel.

Today, it is used as a giant natural surface for video mapping, with the image projected from a distance of approximately 230 meters.

For video projection, this presents a serious engineering challenge. The greater the distance between the projector and the surface, the more difficult it becomes to maintain the required brightness, contrast, sharpness and precise image alignment with the geometry of the object.

When the Scale of a Façade Is No Longer Enough

As Puy de Lumières developed, both its creative ambitions and its technical requirements increased.

For monumental video mapping, simply producing a large image is not enough. The projection must remain bright and detailed across an enormous surface under real urban conditions, where streetlights, shop windows, architectural lighting and other light sources are operating nearby.

Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe became a particularly demanding location. Here, the scale of the object, complex natural terrain and substantial projection distance all have to be taken into account simultaneously.

At the same time, the creative team needed more sophisticated three-dimensional video mapping, precise interaction with the architecture, a richer color palette and greater visual accuracy.

The goal is for viewers to perceive the image not as a conventional projection placed over a building or rock, but as a visual transformation of the object itself.

There is also a less visible but equally important side to the project: the equipment must operate reliably every evening throughout a busy summer season while requiring minimal maintenance.

Why the City Invests in This Technology

The Puy de Lumières festival is developed with the support of the Le Puy-en-Velay urban community and is considered not only a cultural event, but also a tool for tourism development and a contemporary interpretation of the region’s historical heritage.

For this reason, upgrading the projection system is more than simply replacing older equipment with newer models.

For the city, this infrastructure makes it possible to use historic and natural landmarks in a new format, create evening visitor experiences, encourage tourists to spend more time in the city and regularly update content without physically altering the architecture.

For the technological upgrade of Puy de Lumières, a Barco projection platform based on QDX and UDM projectors was selected.

A Unified Projection Platform for Different Types of Sites

The Puy de Lumières locations differ significantly from one another: a flat museum façade, the complex architecture of a church and the uneven surface of a volcanic rock all require different approaches.

For this reason, the project combines QDX and UDM projectors. This configuration makes it possible to select the required brightness, resolution, optics and number of projectors for each specific surface while maintaining a unified technological approach.

At the core of the system is Barco 3-chip DLP laser technology with a laser-phosphor light source.

In a three-chip DLP system, the light output is divided into three primary color components, with each one formed by a separate DLP chip.

For large-scale projection, this provides several important advantages: high brightness, accurate color reproduction, strong contrast and image stability.

When a single route includes completely different surfaces — from an architectural façade to natural volcanic rock — consistency of color and image quality becomes not only an engineering requirement, but also an artistic one.

230 Meters to the “Screen”

The most demanding configuration is used at Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe.

Three Barco QDX-4K45 projectors create an image on the volcanic rock from a distance of approximately 230 meters.

At this distance, high light output, high resolution and long-throw optics are all required at the same time.

If any one of these parameters is insufficient, fine graphic details begin to disappear, contrast decreases and the image no longer appears visually coherent.

On the façade of the Crozatier Museum, two QDX-4K35 projectors are used. Their 4K resolution makes it possible to interact precisely with the building’s architectural details and create graphics aligned with the actual geometry of the façade.

For the Carmes Church, the system consists of eight UDM-W30 projectors. Here, high brightness and the flexibility of a multi-projector configuration are particularly important: several projectors work together to create a large-scale image precisely aligned with the architecture.

As a result, three completely different projection tasks — a museum façade, a church and a natural rock formation — become parts of one visual project.

Why Laser Projection Matters for a Permanent Project

For a museum, park or municipal authority, the choice of technology is determined not only by how impressive the show looks on opening night.

A permanent system must operate for hundreds of hours per season.

A laser light source reduces routine maintenance compared with previous generations of lamp-based projectors. There is no need to regularly replace lamps or schedule equipment downtime associated with this process, while image characteristics remain more stable over extended periods of operation.

For Puy de Lumières, this means the technical team can spend less time servicing the system and more time developing content and new show scenarios.

In addition, modern laser projectors enable more efficient use of light-source lifetime and energy consumption, which becomes particularly important for permanent seasonal installations.

A Historic Monument as Part of a Multimedia Exhibition

Following the technical upgrade, Puy de Lumières enters its tenth season with broader visual and creative possibilities.

However, the most important change is not limited to projector power or resolution.

It changes the way visitors interact with cultural heritage itself.

A museum façade, church or rock formation is no longer perceived solely as a static historical object. During the show, its architecture becomes part of the narrative: individual elements can visually disappear, change scale, color or texture, while the graphics precisely follow the real shape of the structure.

In this way, projection video mapping transforms architecture into a storytelling medium without physically altering the monument itself.

This is why the technology is particularly relevant for museums, heritage parks and tourist destinations. An existing landmark becomes part of a multimedia exhibition, while the surrounding space gains a new purpose after dark.

In the case of Puy de Lumières, the upgrade is not simply a new fleet of projectors. It is a technological infrastructure that makes it possible to create new stories around the same cultural heritage for many years.

At the same time, the architecture and natural landscape remain the main protagonists, while technology helps audiences see them from a new perspective.
