Acoustic challenges of Dinamo Arena

Dinamo Arena, the largest concert venue in Georgia, is known for its complex acoustics. Olympic-size stadiums pose a major challenge for system engineers: long distances, reflective surfaces, and curved geometry complicate the delivery of consistent tonal balance and vocal intelligibility across every seat.

System designer Andrey Akhromeev explains: “Designing a system with the stage placed along the long side of the stadium is never easy. The coverage area stretches nearly 180 meters wide and spans close to 180 degrees. Our main task was not only to ensure even coverage but also to minimize reflections, particularly from the VIP boxes’ glass surfaces around the stadium perimeter.”

L-Acoustics system design

The main PA consisted of 4 × K1-SB, 12 × K1, 4 × K2 and 12 × KS28 per side, with almost identical clusters covering the side diagonals (4 × K1-SB, 12 × K1, 2 × K2). The near-field coverage at the stage was handled by 12 Kara II, while 12 ground-stacked clusters of 3 × KS28 reinforced the low end.

To cover the stadium stands, engineers deployed six delay towers with 12 × K2 each, plus two towers with 10 × K2 each. The entire system was powered by 105 L-Acoustics LA12X amplifiers, receiving AVB signals from L-Acoustics P1 processors.

K1 and K2 are L-Acoustics’ benchmark systems for arenas, stadiums, and festivals. Both systems seamlessly integrate with K1-SB and KS28 subwoofers and are pre-modeled in Soundvision to ensure precise coverage, optimized tonal balance, and predictable vocal intelligibility from the front rows to the top tiers.

DiGiCo Quantum 852 at FOH

At front of house, sound engineer James Berry mixed the show on the new DiGiCo Quantum 852, the flagship console designed for large-scale productions requiring maximum channel count and advanced routing.

The console’s FPGA + SHARC architecture delivers unrivaled processing power with ultra-low latency. Three large multi-touch screens and 52 faders give engineers fast access to hundreds of channels, while integrated Mustard and Spice modules handle advanced processing without the need for external racks.

The integration of Fourier Audio’s transform.engine enabled plugin hosting directly within the DiGiCo workflow, helping Berry faithfully reproduce Timberlake’s signature vocal tone throughout the massive stadium.

Despite the scale and acoustic complexity of the project, the entire system performed flawlessly, delivering world-class sound for all 55,000 fans at Dinamo Arena.
