Immersive Audiovisual Technologies: Diving into a World of Unique Experiences

1
Immersive audiovisual technologies are increasingly being utilized in entertainment, education, corporate branding, advertising, and more. But what truly makes an environment immersive?

The term "immersive" encompasses a variety of audiovisual installations designed to enhance sensory experiences and create an imaginative world or a sense of participation in the events unfolding. A key aspect is the emotional engagement they evoke, whether it’s the stress felt by a pilot during a simulation or the joy experienced by visitors at immersive media exhibitions. For instance, we can look at the ARTE MUSEUM in Seoul, created by the globally renowned company d’strict, to see how immersive visualization technologies craft captivating experiences.

To create a unique experience at ARTE MUSEUM, the following equipment was utilized:

72 UDM-4K22 projectors
139 G60-W8 projectors
29 G62-W9 projectors with G lenses

“In the historic Cellular Jail in India, Barco projectors play a crucial role in narrating the poignant stories of freedom fighters through immersive projections.”

When designing projection-based attractions that incorporate elements of immersion and interactivity, several key factors must be considered. Despite having a clear vision, implementation can be a complex task.

First, the visuals must captivate guests with high-quality and realistic images. This necessitates careful calibration, control of ambient light, image optimization, and seamless alignment. Second, the technology should be as unobtrusive as possible to maintain the illusion and minimize distractions. Finally, reliability is paramount, especially for venues operating seven days a week, to avoid disappointing visitors during peak hours.

“ARTE MUSEUM by d’strict: Barco projectors bring digital gardens and underwater worlds to life with stunning clarity and color accuracy.”

The partnership between Barco and d’strict began with ARTE MUSEUM in the South Korean cities of Yeosu and Gangneung. This marked the first instance of using Barco projection technology to create an immersive multimedia experience. Based on strong and trusting relationships, Barco provided d’strict with tailored solutions for their needs.

For the exhibitions at ARTE MUSEUM in Gangneung and Yeosu, 72 Barco UDM-4K22 projectors were deployed, delivering outstanding brightness, precision, and color consistency. Sean Lee, CEO of d’strict, noted, “We conducted blind tests with several projector brands, and the UDM from Barco demonstrated the best image quality.” The UDM was also the first projector in Barco's lineup to be fully integrated with the Barco Insights Management Suite, enabling rapid troubleshooting.

The project incorporated not only the flagship UDM-4K22 projectors but also a total of 168 Barco projectors across three ARTE MUSEUM locations, including 139 G60-W8 models and 29 G62-W9 models. The compact G60 series offers a wide range of lenses, allowing d’strict to meet projection needs at various zoom ratios for precise image matching. The G62 series delivers excellent image quality thanks to its laser phosphor light source and requires less maintenance compared to traditional lamp-based projectors. With Barco's Projector Toolset software, installation and management of these projectors can be conducted from any location.

To create large-scale visual immersions, laser projectors like those from Barco are typically employed. Choosing the right projector is crucial for crafting believable illusions and seamless experiences.

Thus, immersive technologies continue to evolve, opening new horizons for creativity and audience interaction.
