The new Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre in Victoria, Australia, has deployed Riedel Communications solutions for video signal distribution and production intercom. The venue's technical infrastructure combines the MediorNet video distribution system with an Artist-based intercom system. Together, these solutions support 12G-SDI video signal transport, integration with outside broadcast (OB) trucks, and communication between technical teams throughout the venue.
Opened on 20 June 2026 on Geelong's waterfront, the convention centre includes the 1,000-seat Wala Mirr Theatre, approximately 3,700 m² of flexible event space, and several conference rooms with adaptable layouts. The venue is designed to accommodate conferences, exhibitions, gala events, and concerts. It is also expected to host events requiring regional and national television broadcasts, creating a need for flexible video signal distribution and intercom infrastructure.
Nyaal Banyul uses Riedel MediorNet to connect production areas and technical facilities across the venue within a unified video distribution network.
Fibre-optic connections run throughout the building, supporting the transport of 12G-SDI video signals. This allows television cameras to be connected in different areas of the venue, with their signals routed to the central production infrastructure.
When required, a compact Riedel MicroN UHD video processing and distribution unit can be deployed directly in an event space. Cameras and other video sources connected to the unit become part of the wider MediorNet network, allowing their signals to be transported to the central production facilities over the existing fibre infrastructure without running individual cables from each source.
This architecture is particularly useful in multipurpose venues, where camera positions, screens, and technical workstations may change depending on the event format.
Special consideration was given to integrating the venue's infrastructure with equipment brought in by visiting broadcasters and external television production teams.
A dedicated 24-core single-mode fibre connection runs from the central MediorNet infrastructure to the designated outside broadcast truck position.
This connection enables signals to be exchanged between the convention centre's equipment and an OB truck. If the visiting production vehicle is also equipped with MediorNet, it can connect directly to the venue's network over fibre.
This approach simplifies the preparation of television broadcasts and makes it possible to use the venue's existing infrastructure without building a separate video distribution system for every production.
"MediorNet allows us to connect 12G-SDI signals to the network wherever fibre is available in the building. We can route individual camera feeds back to the central system, deploy a MicroN UHD directly in an event space, or connect an OB truck equipped with MediorNet. This gives us considerable flexibility when supporting different types of events," said Michael Walker, Senior Manager of Audiovisual at Nyaal Banyul.
To coordinate production personnel across the convention centre, a Riedel intercom system built around Artist has been installed. It brings together Bolero wireless intercom, PunQtum wired partyline intercom, and Riedel SmartPanels.
Sixteen Bolero antennas provide wireless coverage throughout the building and its surrounding outdoor areas. The venue also has 36 Bolero wireless beltpacks available for staff and production teams.
In the Wala Mirr Theatre, the Artist system is complemented by PunQtum equipment and Riedel SmartPanels. This combination supports both wired and wireless communication between sound engineers, lighting designers, technical directors, event organisers, and visiting broadcast crews.
Team members can move between conference rooms, performance spaces, and technical areas while remaining in contact with their colleagues.
This is particularly important during large-scale events, when several teams are simultaneously responsible for staging, sound, lighting, video production, and television broadcasting.
A defining feature of the Nyaal Banyul installation is the combination of flexible video signal distribution and an integrated production intercom infrastructure.
MediorNet enables video signals to be routed between different areas of the complex and supports connections to external OB trucks. Artist, Bolero, PunQtum, and SmartPanel solutions provide communication between technical personnel, regardless of their location within the venue.
"Nyaal Banyul demonstrates how an integrated video and intercom infrastructure can accommodate the diverse requirements of a modern event venue. MediorNet provides flexible video signal distribution throughout the complex, while the Artist intercom system brings together wired and wireless communications for technical teams and visiting production crews," said Chris Johnson, Director Oceania at Riedel Communications.
The Nyaal Banyul project demonstrates an approach to equipping multipurpose venues in which a single technical infrastructure can support conferences, concerts, exhibitions, and television broadcasts.
For system designers and integrators, this approach makes it possible to plan for different operating scenarios from the outset, ensure equipment compatibility, and reduce the amount of temporary cabling and additional connections required when preparing for events.
