How Central Asian Culture Is Becoming Multimedia

1
Central Asia is experiencing steady growth in initiatives aimed at preserving, transmitting, and transforming cultural heritage. In recent years, numerous programs have been launched across the region to bring traditions, history, and art closer to younger generations in more engaging ways.

In many of these projects, technology plays a crucial role: multimedia exhibitions, digital archives, projection installations, and interactive displays. This approach not only safeguards heritage but also reintroduces it in a contemporary form, making it part of today’s cultural dialogue.

Projects Redefining Heritage: Jadids and Khiva

One of the landmark events was the multimedia exhibition “Jadids. Letters to Turkestan”. Spanning 1,400 m², it brought rare early 20th-century documents to life through large-scale projections and immersive soundscapes in three languages. To create the visual installations, Barco G60, G62, and G100 projectors were deployed, managed remotely via the Barco Projector Toolset. This setup allowed precise projection mapping and seamless image alignment, even across complex architectural surfaces.

In ancient Khiva, the opening of the “Arda Khiva” tourist complex was marked by a spectacular multimedia show. Six ultra-bright Barco UDM-4K30 projectors cast imagery onto walls from nearly 100 meters away, transforming architecture into a giant living canvas where patterns and legends of the Silk Road came alive. The project has become a symbol of a new cultural era for the region.

New Cultural Spaces in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

This year is set to break records in the number of new cultural venues in Central Asia where history and cutting-edge AV technologies converge, transforming museums and architectural landmarks into immersive multimedia hubs.

Almaty, Kazakhstan – The Center for Contemporary Culture “Tselinny” will open in autumn in a former Soviet cinema building, hosting exhibitions, performances, and discussions on culture, ecology, and regional identity.

Astana, Kazakhstan – The International Artificial Intelligence Center  will combine art and technology, offering interactive exhibitions, educational programs, and innovation spaces.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan – The Center of Islamic Civilization will present rare manuscripts, artifacts, and multimedia installations revealing the region’s Islamic heritage.

Almaty, Kazakhstan – The Almaty Museum of Arts, the region’s first private contemporary art museum, will showcase over 700 works by Kazakh and international artists.

These spaces form a new cultural ecosystem in Central Asia where tradition and innovation complement each other. Multimedia systems—particularly projection technologies—are central, turning architecture and galleries into dynamic storytelling environments.

How Projection Technologies Turn Museums Into Living Spaces

Projection technology has become an indispensable tool for creating immersive museum exhibitions and cultural installations. Walls, ceilings, and floors are transformed into full multimedia canvases. Through projection mapping and precise image calibration, artifacts and narratives come alive as light-based stories and interactive experiences.

These solutions make it possible to create seamless large-scale visuals, even on complex surfaces, enhancing emotional engagement and transforming traditional exhibitions into captivating multimedia spectacles.
