DiGiCo has introduced the Quantum638, a new digital mixing console in the Quantum range. Positioned between the Quantum852 and Quantum338 Pulse, the new model fills the space previously occupied by the SD7 and SD5.

DiGiCo has introduced the Quantum638, a new digital mixing console in the Quantum range. Positioned between the Quantum852 and Quantum338 Pulse, the new model fills the space previously occupied by the SD7 and SD5.

In developing the Quantum638, DiGiCo has retained a number of elements familiar to SD7 and SD5 users and brought them onto the latest Quantum platform. The console combines increased processing capacity with an updated worksurface, expanded Macro control and a choice of Single Engine or Dual Engine configurations.

The two key features of the Quantum638 are 256 input channels with full processing and the availability of both Single Engine and Dual Engine configurations on the same platform. It is the first Quantum console to be offered in both formats, while the Dual Engine version can also be operated in Single Engine mode.

256 Input Channels and Quantum Architecture

Quantum638 provides 256 input channels and 128 Aux/Sub-Group busses, all with full processing.

The console also features a 48 x 48 fully processed Matrix, 128 Nodal Processing instances, 64 Mustard Processing strips, 16 Spice Rack slots and True Solo.

In terms of capacity, the Quantum638 sits between the Quantum852 and Quantum338 Pulse. It is aimed at productions requiring a high channel count and extensive processing while maintaining a worksurface footprint close to that of the SD7.

A Familiar Worksurface

The Quantum638 features three 17-inch high-resolution touchscreens and 38 touch-sensitive, motorised 100mm faders, divided across three worksurface sections with two dedicated Master faders.

Three 14-inch high-resolution meterbridge screens sit above the main worksurface, complemented by three Bank Switcher screens and 53 full-colour TFT displays across the channel sections. This gives the operator immediate access to channel information, metering and assigned functions.

SD7 users will recognise the dedicated Gain/Trim encoders, while Macro operation has been further developed on the Quantum638.

Each channel has dedicated channel Macros that move with the channel as the console layout changes. Assignable Macroder rotary encoders dynamically change function according to the currently selected channel.

InfoBar and System Status

Another addition to the worksurface is the InfoBar.

It provides permanent access to key information including Snapshots, timecode, actual time and system warnings. This allows the engineer to monitor console status directly from the worksurface without moving between additional windows.

For live and theatre applications, this becomes particularly useful when the operator needs to keep track of the current Cue, timecode, channel status and monitoring modes at the same time.

Single Engine and Dual Engine

Quantum638 is available in both Single Engine and Dual Engine configurations.

The Dual Engine version can also be operated in Single Engine mode, allowing the system architecture to be selected according to production scale, redundancy requirements and budget.

Each processing engine provides two DMI slots, a MultiMode Optocore interface, Dante Primary and Secondary connectivity, a Fourier Interface Card and MADI I/O.

A single MultiMode Optocore interface provides 504 additional audio paths at both 48kHz and 96kHz. An optional second Optocore loop can be added to further expand the available audio paths.

Dante, Fourier and DMI

Onboard Dante is included as standard on the Quantum638.

The console also includes a Fourier Interface Card for native integration with the Fourier Audio transform.engine platform.

Two DMI slots per processing engine allow the I/O configuration to be adapted to the requirements of the system. Compatible options include AES, Dante, KLANG, MADI, Waves and other DMI formats.

Quantum638T for Theatre

Alongside the standard Quantum638, DiGiCo has introduced the Quantum638T.

Built on the same hardware platform, the T version adds the Theatre software extension, including Auto Update, Aliases, Players, advanced Control Group programming tools and Matrix Nodal Delays.

Quantum638T is intended for musicals, plays, theatrical touring and fixed installations where Cue management, cast changes and complex routing form a central part of the workflow.

Dimensions and Position in the Range

The Quantum638 worksurface measures 1555 x 957 x 535mm and weighs 93kg.

Its footprint is close to that of the SD7, which is particularly relevant for venues replacing an existing console or touring systems already designed around an SD7-sized worksurface.

Quantum638 is designed for live concerts, festivals, touring productions, theatrical applications and fixed installations. Quantum638T uses the same core platform while adding a dedicated set of tools for theatre programming.
