Barco UDM Powers Multimedia Show at Arda Khiva Tourist Complex

1
The grand opening of the Arda Khiva tourist complex in the Khorezm region marked a cultural milestone for Uzbekistan. Designed as a fusion of Khiva’s historical heritage and cutting-edge multimedia technology, the event was a flagship moment in the country's state program for tourism development. With President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in attendance, the complex was officially launched, covering 25 hectares on the shores of Lake Gaukkul — featuring hotels, museums, oriental bazaars, gondola canals, a 3,000-seat amphitheater, and more. The project aims to position Khiva as a major international tourism hub, targeting up to 3 million visitors annually.

One of the highlights of the opening ceremony was an architectural video projection onto the walls of Ichan-Kala, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This visual segment was crucial in delivering an immersive experience that connected the region’s cultural narrative with modern AV storytelling.

The challenge

The technical requirements were rigorous — deliver high-brightness, high-resolution projection across a vast architectural surface from distances of up to 98 meters. The projection system had to perform reliably outdoors, in nighttime conditions, and conform to complex structural geometries while maintaining pixel density and image fidelity.

The solution

A total of six Barco UDM-4K30 projectors were deployed — each offering 27,000 lumens and 4K compatibility. The team used Barco TLD+ 4.5–7.5 long-throw lenses to ensure precise focus at extended distances. Two central projectors were installed in portrait orientation to maximize vertical pixel density and minimize brightness loss due to image overlap. Each image covered an area of 16.7 × 9.6 meters, with an average surface illuminance of 186 lux — optimal for crisp visibility in open-air environments.

The result

The projection became a visual centerpiece of the inauguration and a symbol of the region’s commitment to blending culture with technology. As noted by Yevgeny Mosin, technical engineer at 3D Mapping Studio (responsible for installation and system integration), “We were working under extreme throw conditions, and only Barco UDM delivered uncompromised brightness and detail. Portrait mounting allowed us to maintain image structure even on large-scale geometry.”

This installation not only enhanced the ceremonial impact but also served as a technological showcase for Uzbekistan’s evolving cultural infrastructure. The President’s endorsement of Arda Khiva as a future icon of Khorezm’s tourism underscores the importance of reliable, high-performance AV systems in national-scale events. Once again, Barco demonstrated why it remains a trusted choice for mission-critical projection solutions.
