At the core of Barco’s recently introduced I600 is new and patented SuperShift® technology. The combination of Barco’s own pixel-shift algorithms with the latest developments in super-resolution technology refines the 4K projection quality with smoother images and sharper pixels at remarkably low latency. Here’s a quick peek of how that works.
There are basically two types of 4K technology. The first one is the most simple and direct: a 4K input gets processed pixel by pixel to a 4K output. This way, all image information is fed in a direct pipeline from input to output without any manipulations on that image.
The second technology is what is called pixel-shifting. With pixel-shifting, a native 4K input is broken down into multiple lower resolution sub-frames, each containing a recalculated set of pixels based on the original 4K image. These images are then displayed through a so-called actuator which very quickly shows the images offset from each other to deliver a 4K UHD image on the screen.
While pixel-shifting effectively simulates 4K, Barco takes this further by integrating super-resolution, a technique used in medical and scientific imaging to improve detail and sharpness. Super-resolution works by combining multiple lower-resolution versions of an image to interpolate missing details and smooth out imperfections.
By combining pixel-shifting with reverse super-resolution techniques, Barco SuperShift® reconstructs finer textures, reduces visual noise, and eliminates common scaling artifacts – resulting in sharper, more detailed images.
Thanks to Barco's proprietary Pulse electronics and Single Step Processing™, this resolution breakthrough happens seamlessly. Our unique internal system processes each pixel’s data in parallel. The projector can perform several simultaneous processing intensive tasks, like pixel-shifting and warping/blending, without adding extra latency. This means you get smooth, ultra-high-resolution images with incredible clarity, even with fast-moving content.
