Barco Projection for Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture — Almaty, Kazakhstan

1
The opening of the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture in Almaty marked a significant milestone for the city’s cultural infrastructure and a new chapter in the reinterpretation of historic public spaces. The project brought together the architectural heritage of the former Tselinny cinema with contemporary artistic practices, multimedia installations, and modern exhibition formats.

The Center operates as a permanent platform for contemporary art, video art, and interdisciplinary projects addressing themes of memory, identity, and cultural dialogue. The regular rotation of exhibitions and extended playback cycles place increased demands on the technical infrastructure—particularly on professional video projection systems.

Project Brief

The technical team of the system integrator Digis was tasked with delivering a projection solution for the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture that would simultaneously serve two key functions:
Given the long playback cycles, operation in darkened exhibition halls, and strict requirements for color accuracy, contrast, and image geometry, the system needed to deliver stable, predictable projection quality while allowing rapid reconfiguration—including de-installation and relocation of projectors to support changing exhibition scenarios.

Solution

For the entrance projection zone and the Center’s universal exhibition projection infrastructure, a fleet of professional laser-phosphor single-chip DLP projectors, Barco G62-W11, was selected. The projectors deliver 11,000 lumens of brightness, native WUXGA resolution, and support for 4K input signals.

The projectors were supplied in white housings to visually integrate the equipment into the predominantly light-colored museum interior and to minimize the visual presence of technology within the exhibition spaces.

To accommodate varying room sizes, architectural constraints, and image scales, a set of standard Barco G Lens optics was deployed, with throw ratios of 0.36:1, 0.75–0.95:1, and 1.52–2.92:1. This lens configuration provided maximum flexibility in installation distances and image sizes, allowing precise adaptation to each artistic and spatial requirement.

Result

The projection system based on Barco G62 projectors has been fully integrated into the permanent technical infrastructure of the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture and is used across multiple exhibition halls for video art and multimedia installations.

The technical performance of the Barco G62 platform ensures stable and consistent image quality, including accurate color reproduction, contrast, and dynamic range. This enables artists to preserve the visual integrity of their works and fully realize their creative intent within the museum environment.

The Barco G62-W11 projectors are currently used for the presentation of the video art installation “Who Guards Your Dreams?” by Daria Temirkhan.
